Taking Your Weight Management Program on the Road
If you are in the active weight loss phase of a meal replacement program be sure to:
- Discuss your travel plans with the weight loss program healthcare staff.
- Preorder an adequate amount of meal replacement products several weeks ahead of time. If you will be traveling by air, chose powdered formula and soups as well as nutrition bars.
- Make sure you have an emergency card with emergency contact information, and directions for substituting conventional foods for meal replacement products in case you somehow run out of product.
- If you will be visiting an area with unique regional cuisine, schedule an appointment with the program dietician a few weeks before you leave so you can figure out how to fit fun foods into your maintenance diet.
- Carry, or better yet wear, comfortable waling shoes (don't forget to pack plenty of walking socks) so you will be motivated to burn off calories while sightseeing.
Air Travel Tips
- When traveling by air, carry several days' worth of powdered formula- and if you use them a few nutrition bars- in your carryon luggage and the remainder in your checked luggage.
- Although dry packaged foods should be permitted in carryon luggage, carrying large quantities may raise questions. To be on the safe side, take along a letter from the medical director of your weight management program explaining your dietary regimen.
- Consider shipping nutritional products to your vacation destination
Road Trip Tricks
- If you are traveling by car, stock a high quality cooler with calorie and caffeine free beverages, ready-to-drink weight loss shakes, and nutrition bars. Bars left in a hot car can change texture and color. Although they will still be safe to eat, they may appear unappealing. If you are in the transition or maintenance phase of your program, add some of your allowed conventional foods to the cooler.
- Refuel you and your car at the same time. Look for gas stations that house Subway Sandwich shops. You can get a made-to-order sandwich or salad topped with grilled chicken and low-calorie dressing that will fit into your maintenance plan. The program staff can help you identify other healthy fast foods you can eat while on the road.
